Welcome to Division 31 (Kansas)
8th Western Rivers Coast Guard District
Dedicated to the Safety of the Boating Public

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of Team Coast Guard.  The Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the US Coast Guard Reserves and re-designated the Auxiliary in 1941.  On October 19, 1996 Congress greatly increased the responsibilities of the Auxiliary.  Congress expanded the ability of the Coast Guard to utilize the Auxiliary for missions not contemplated in 1939.   Auxiliaries' duties now include any role, mission, or operation that the Commandant of the Coast Guard might envision except for law enforcement and military missions.  Thus, the Auxiliary, traditionally known for its Boating Safety Classes and Vessel Safety Checks, have greatly increased responsibilities.  Currently, the Auxiliary has 31,000 members in all 50 states and donate thousands of hours in support of Coast Guard missions.

Division 31 has three flotillas to serve the Eastern half of Kansas.   Additional flotillas will be created as resources permit.  The Flotillas are as follows:  Flotilla 2, Topeka KSFlotilla 6, Wichita, KS;  and Flotilla 9, Perry KS

Fellowship

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

Except for an emergency, the primary focus of the Auxiliary is recreational boating safety.   The Auxiliary does this through four cornerstones - Vessel Examination, Education, Operations and Fellowship.   These cornerstones established in 1941 remain key Auxiliary pillars today.

   Vessel Safety Checks

The Vessel Examination program evolved into the well known Vessel Safety Check (VSC), a free examination available to any recreational boater.  VSC's help boaters ensure their craft complies with all Federal and State regulations regarding safety equipment requirements.   Click here to learn how to schedule a VSC for your boat

   Classes

As for education, the Auxiliary teaches boating safety to recreational boaters of all ages. The Auxiliary offers Boating Skills and Seamanship (geared toward power boaters) and sailing courses (for sail boaters) as well as basic and advanced navigation courses.  If advanced courses are of interest then as a member of the Auxiliary dozens of additional courses are available.   Click here to learn what courses are available and the scheduling  for each

   Patrols

The Auxiliary operates safety and regatta patrols on area lakes and the Missouri River and is an integral part of the Coast Guard Search and Rescue team.  Auxiliary members also stand communication watches, assist during mobilization exercises, perform harbor and pollution patrols.  You must, however, be a member to participate.    Fellowship

Fellowship is essential in making any organization of volunteers successful.  The Coast Guard recognizes the importance of this aspect of volunteer participation and encourages a close relationship between Auxiliarist's and other Coast Guard personnel.   Fellowship makes the team work and binds the entire organization together

Coastie   Sorry, but Coastie has been transferred to Division 16 in Oklahoma.

What means to be a Guardian

The definition of “guardian” is one who guards, watches over, or protects. For the guardians of the U.S. Coast Guard, being a guardian takes several forms.  A guardian could be an Coast Guard Auxiliary member confined to a wheel chair but able to maintain radio guard for a 41 foot Coast Guard boat watchfully guarding our nation’s waterways. It could be a Coast Guard Marine Inspector crawling into the bowels of a foreign container ship’s engine room because the inspector saw a suspicious pool of oil indicating a potential engine failure.  learn more
